– Focus Commodity/ies –
Organic agriculture in the Philippines is still in its emergent or incipient phase. The discourse of organic agriculture is fast gaining ground in the country. Production is limited though steadily growing. Organic market in the country has been discovered as a “niche” market. They are increasingly being sold in major supermarkets with a price premium reportedly ranging from 20-30% over non-organic products. (Yussefi and Willer, 2003)
Organic vegetable farming has proved to be cost-effective and eco-friendly and farmers and consumers will benefit greatly in terms of improving soil characteristics, increased income, health and environmental awareness.
High Value Fruit Trees
High value fruit trees are the banner commodities of the key commercial crop Development Program (KCCDP) of the DA. It supports the production of a wide range of fruit trees including lanzones, rambutan, durian, citrus among others.
Fruit production is a profitable enterprise and a promising way of raising the income of slopeland farmers. Existing food production and environment conservation programs in the Philippines tend to integrate fruit trees into existing cropping system. Fruit tree production poses a great deal of economic potential for a resource rich country like the Philippines.
